Seeding Built for Prairie Soil and Lake Weather

Hydroseeding Chicago sprays seed, mulch and fertilizer for new lawns, builder lots, commercial sites, slopes and swales across Chicago and the suburbs around it. Silt fence and storm-inlet protection are part of our work too, along with spreading and grading topsoil and bringing thinned-out lawns back with repair and overseeding.

The ground here sets the rules. Much of northern Illinois sits on glacial till plains, and the USDA describes soils like Markham, first mapped in Lake County, as silty clay loam over dense till with slow permeability and a perched water table in spring. Further out, the dark prairie soils such as Drummer, the Illinois state soil, are poorly drained by nature. The city itself is close to flat. Water does not run off quickly, it sits, and that changes how we grade, how much mulch we spray and where we put erosion control.

The weather sets the calendar. University of Illinois Extension puts the ideal window for seeding cool-season lawns in northern Illinois at early August to early September, with April as the second choice. We plan most new lawns around that window and tell you plainly when a date is a gamble.

Our process on a Chicago job

  • A crew member comes out, measures the ground to be seeded and looks it over before any number is written down
  • Every estimate is written and lists prep, seed mix, mulch type and any slope or erosion work separately
  • Grade and topsoil are checked before a single gallon of slurry goes down
  • Seed mixes are picked for sun, shade and traffic, usually Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fescues
  • On construction sites we follow the erosion and sediment control plan you already have, or work with your engineer
  • You get written watering and mowing instructions the day we spray
