Seeding Hills Once Used for Auto Racing
Hydroseeding in Algonquin means working with grade. From 1906 to 1913, the village's hills hosted early automobile hill climbs on Phillips Hill, Perry Hill and Huntington Hill, and Hill Climb Park now marks the old finish line. The Fox River runs north to south through the heart of downtown.
Slopes on river-side lots
Yards that climb away from the Fox, or drop toward it, shed rain quickly. Bare soil on those grades moves with the first storm. We size the mulch rate to the slope, use bonded fiber matrix on the steepest spots, and keep runoff from funneling down a single side yard.
Woods Creek and the west side
Woods Creek, a creek, nature preserve and trail, runs south to north through the far west side, near neighborhoods like Manchester Lakes. Lots that drain toward the creek get silt fence during construction and quick seeding afterward so sediment stays out of the preserve.
Growth since the 1980s
Algonquin stayed small until residential building took off in the 1980s and continued through the 1990s and 2000s. Retail moved to Randall Road, and the Algonquin Corporate Campus, begun in the mid-2000s, is planned for over 1,000 acres on the southwest side. Commercial pads there need large-area hydroseeding and basin stabilization.
Two counties
About 78 percent of the village is in McHenry County and the rest in Kane County.
