Seeding on a Hillside Over Stone

Hydroseeding in Lemont is slope work more often than not. The village sits on a hillside along the south bank of the Des Plaines River, at about 738 feet, and looks across the river toward the bluff savanna of Waterfall Glen. Few towns near Chicago have this much grade inside their limits, and grade is the first thing we plan around.

Slopes need more than seed

On a hillside, raindrops loosen bare soil and runoff carries it downhill before seed can root. For moderate slopes we spray hydromulch with a tackifier at a heavier rate. For steeper cuts, we use bonded fiber matrix or install straw or coconut erosion control blankets and seed through them. At the toe of a slope, silt fence catches what moves.

Stone close to the surface

Workers digging the I&M Canal here struck Lemont yellow dolomite, harder and finer grained than ordinary limestone, and quarrying became a major local industry. Many important buildings were faced with Lemont stone. Where rock is near the surface, topsoil can be thin. We test depth and add soil where needed so a new lawn has enough root zone to survive dry weeks.

A lesson from across the river

At Rocky Glen Falls in Waterfall Glen, runoff from a nearby mill eroded the falls, and the Civilian Conservation Corps restored them in the 1930s. It is a local reminder of how fast concentrated water reshapes ground. On Lemont lots, we spread runoff out instead of letting gutters and swales dump it in one spot.

Three counties

Lemont lies in Cook, DuPage and Will counties, so stormwater review for larger projects depends on location.

Lemont Questions

At what slope does a Lemont yard need more than standard hydroseed?

Gentle grades hold fine with tackified mulch. Steeper slopes get bonded fiber matrix or blankets, and we decide on site.

My Lemont yard has rock a few inches down. Can grass grow?

Yes, with enough topsoil added on top. We check the depth before quoting.

Where should my downspouts go on a hillside lot?

Spread the water out or pipe it to a stable outlet. Dumping it at one point on a slope cuts gullies through new seed.

Do you put silt fence at the bottom of slopes?

Yes, when soil could reach a street, neighbor or drainage channel.
