Lawns Along a River That Floods
Hydroseeding in Gurnee often follows high water. The village sits on the banks of the Des Plaines River, and in May 2004 heavy rain caused what Wikipedia calls the worst flooding in 100 years, closing schools and damaging dozens of homes and businesses. The river's greatest recorded flood, in September 1986, caused about $35 million in damage across its course.
After a flood
Floodwater leaves silt, debris and dead grass behind. Once the yard dries, we clear debris, scrape off thick silt deposits where they smother the lawn, regrade where water cut channels and hydroseed. The mulch layer protects new seed from the next rain while the yard recovers.
East side and west side
Interstate 94 splits Gurnee into an older east side and a newer west side. East side lots near the river see the most flood and floodplain concerns; the west side grew later, with the population climbing from 7,179 in 1980 to 28,834 in 2000. Lawns there are more often renovation or first-time seeding on newer lots.
River greenway
Forest preserve land along the Des Plaines forms a nearly continuous greenway through Lake County. Osprey Lake in Gurnee drains to the river through a small creek. Lots that border that open space need silt fence during work and a quick, even cover of seed so sediment stays out of the water.
Seed for wet sites
For yards that flood now and then, we lean toward blends that tolerate saturated soil and recover quickly.

Gurnee Questions
The river flooded my yard and left a layer of silt. Can you fix it?
Yes. We clear debris, remove heavy silt, regrade washouts and hydroseed once the ground dries.
What grass handles occasional flooding?
Blends that tolerate wet soil and recover fast. We choose by how often and how long the yard floods.
Do you seed newer lots on the west side of I-94?
Yes, including grading, topsoil and silt fence if needed.
My yard borders forest preserve land. Anything special?
We keep silt fence on the line during work and seed promptly so no sediment crosses into the preserve.
