Two Kinds of Ground in One City

Hydroseeding in Joliet changes with the part of town. The city grew along the Des Plaines River, its downtown sits down in the river valley, and it lies on both banks. From there it spreads in a sprawling, irregular shape across nine townships in Will and Kendall counties. A valley-side yard near downtown and a flat lot out west need different prep, different mulch and sometimes different seed.

Valley slopes

Around the river valley, yards often tilt toward the water. On those banks, plain seed and straw can slide in the first heavy rain. We use hydromulch with a strong tackifier on moderate slopes and erosion control blankets or bonded fiber matrix where the grade gets steep, and we keep runoff from concentrating at one corner of the yard.

Limestone country

Joliet's history is tied to stone. The Old Joliet Prison was built from local limestone from Joliet and nearby Romeoville, and Wikipedia notes the mound Louis Jolliet mapped near the city was later flattened by mining. Where rock sits close to the surface, soil can be thin. We check depth with a probe before seeding and add topsoil where there is not enough to hold moisture through July.

Canal-era neighborhoods

Joliet was one of the main ports on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and the I&M Canal State Trail still runs about 60 miles to Peru. Older neighborhoods near the canal often have compacted, mixed fill. Lawn renovation there usually means breaking up the surface, adding organic matter and overseeding rather than starting from bare dirt.

Newer lots farther out

On the outer subdivisions, the work is more standard: fine grading, topsoil, hydroseed and sometimes silt fence along the lot line until the grass fills in.

Joliet Questions

My yard slopes down toward the river. Will hydroseed stay put?

On gentle slopes, yes, with a tackified mulch. On steeper banks we add a blanket or bonded fiber matrix.

What if there is rock just under my lawn?

We check soil depth first. If it is thin over rock, we bring in topsoil so the grass can hold water through summer.

Can an old canal-neighborhood lawn be renovated without tearing it all out?

Often yes. Core work, organic matter and overseeding can bring back a thin lawn without starting over.

Do you cover the Kendall County side of Joliet?

Yes, both the Will and Kendall County parts of the city.
