Grass Under Trees, Water Toward the East Branch
Hydroseeding in Lisle happens almost entirely inside one watershed. Wikipedia notes that most of the village drains to the East Branch of the DuPage River, and the early settlement was even called DuPage or East DuPage for its closeness to the river. The East Branch, about 25 miles long, flows from Bloomingdale south through Glen Ellyn, Lisle and Woodridge before meeting the West Branch near Bolingbrook.
Thinking downstream
Whatever washes off a bare Lisle yard heads to the East Branch. When we regrade or seed, we keep silt fence and inlet protection in place on sites that need them, and we cover bare soil quickly with hydromulch so the first storm does not carry it to the storm sewer.
Lawns among mature trees
The Morton Arboretum, founded in 1922 by Joy Morton, covers 1,700 acres in Lisle, and its Center for Tree Science has more than 30 scientists studying urban trees. Many Lisle yards have big trees of their own. Grading and seeding near trees should avoid piling soil over roots or scraping the root zone. We hand-rake around trunks and spray seed into shade without driving over roots.
Shade seeding
Turf under a big canopy struggles. We use shade-tolerant blends and set honest expectations: in deep shade, a groundcover or mulch bed can be the better choice.
Mid-century neighborhoods
Lisle was incorporated in 1956 and grew from 4,219 residents in 1960 to 13,638 in 1980. Many lawns date from those decades and respond well to aeration and overseeding.

Lisle Questions
Can you regrade near my big oak without hurting it?
We avoid adding fill or scraping over the root zone and hand-work the area around the trunk.
Will grass grow in the shade of my Lisle yard?
Light shade, yes, with a shade blend. Deep shade may be better as a bed or groundcover.
Why bother with silt fence on a small lot?
Soil off a bare lot goes straight to the storm sewer and the East Branch. A short run of fence and quick seeding prevent it.
Can you overseed my 1970s lawn?
Yes, aeration plus hydroseed overseeding works well on older lawns.
