Lawns on an Ice-Age Lake Floor
Hydroseeding in Plainfield works on ground with an unusual past. The village was once part of proglacial Lake Wauponsee, and while downtown sits around 600 to 625 feet, some western and northwestern outskirts climb past 700 feet on terminal moraines left by the Wisconsin glaciation. Flat lake-bed ground and rolling moraine edges both show up inside village limits, sometimes in the same subdivision.
A village rebuilt fast
Plainfield had about 4,500 residents in 1990 and nearly 45,000 by 2020. After the F5 tornado of August 28, 1990, which damaged or destroyed more than 1,100 homes, new subdivisions spread across what had mostly been farmland. Many lawns here went in during that rush. Some were seeded on thin topsoil over compacted subgrade, and they show it with thin, patchy turf that never filled in.
Flat lots versus moraine lots
On the flatter old lake floor, water tends to sit after rain, so we pay attention to grade before seeding and avoid low spots that pond. On moraine lots to the west, the problem flips: short slopes shed water quickly and can rill. There we use a heavier hydromulch or blankets on the steeper sections.
The DuPage River through the center
The DuPage River flows through the village center toward the Des Plaines. Recurring flooding along it led DuPage County, with federal transportation funding, to remove many flood-hit homes in Plainfield. If your lot is near the river or a tributary, ask us about seed blends that handle wet feet and silt fence that keeps soil out of the channel during work.

Plainfield Questions
Why is my 20-year-old Plainfield lawn still thin?
Many lawns from the building boom went in on very little topsoil. Adding soil, loosening the surface and overseeding usually fixes it.
My lot is on a rise west of town and the seed keeps washing. What helps?
Short moraine slopes shed water fast. A heavier mulch or an erosion blanket on the steep part holds seed until it roots.
Do you seed lots that back onto the DuPage River?
Yes. We pick a blend that tolerates wet spells and keep silt fence up during the work.
Can you handle both Will and Kendall County parts of Plainfield?
Yes, the village spans both and we work in both.
